Returning to the Lakes

Eagle-eyed visitors will have noticed that Coming to the Lakes has been missing someone for a while. The “Paleo-Indian” figure was removed so museum staff could attempt to make necessary repairs. The iconic figure was built by Oscar Freuh in 1938 as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project and has been around as long as there has been a Muskegon County Museum. Unfortunately the damage to the original was so severe that staff agreed he could not be put back out on display.

Instead Assistant Curator of Exhibits, Krista Menacher was put in charge of finding a replacement.  She contacted Dorfman Museum Figures Inc., the same company that produced the other mannequins in the Coming to the Lakes gallery.  Dani LaFleur, the Collections and Technology manager also got involved in the project by making clothing for the new Paleo-Indian.  The new Paleo-Indian, dubbed “Chip” by the museum’s Board, is now seated comfortably in his new home. He looks a lot like his predecessor, and even wears the same deerskin around his shoulders as the original. Next time you visit the museum be sure to stop by and meet the new guy!
